2024-25 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Steven Woodside

President

Steven trained as a chemical engineer and works in the biotechnology sector. His prior volunteer board experience includes serving as President of the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra and Treasurer for the Calgary Civic Symphony.

An active member of the Civic’s horn section, Steven values the balance music brings to his professional life.

Caroline Becq

Vice President

Caroline Becq has spent over a decade working as an administrative professional for non-profit arts organizations in Calgary including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Alberta Ballet and Alberta University for the Arts. She has worn many hats at the Calgary Philharmonic and currently leads their box office team as Sales Manager.

Caroline studied Music Performance at the University of Ottawa and continues to play the flute in her spare time. Her passion for music is what drives her to support Calgary’s thriving performing arts scene both professionally and through volunteer work.

Caroline joined The Civic’s board of directors in 2022.

Dr. Richard Ingram

Treasurer

Richard is a specialist physician at Foothills Medical Centre. He trained in the UK and in Canada, and moved to Calgary in 2019.

Richard has played bassoon with the Calgary Civic Symphony since 2019, after learning about this fantastic orchestra at the Third Annual Calgary Bassoonists’ BBQ earlier that summer! He has played piano and bassoon for nearly 30 years, including with youth and amateur orchestras in Jersey, the UK, and Calgary. Richard loves musicals and classical music.

Richard is our Treasurer, chair of the Finance and Audit Committee, and a member of the Fund Development Committee.

Thank you to all our donors, volunteers and supporters for all that you do to support the Civic!

Sarah Patrick

Secretary

Sarah is a founding partner, practicing lawyer and mediator at Knight Molloy Patrick LLP, a Calgary law firm specializing in criminal and family law. She obtained her BA from the University of Saskatchewan and her law degree from the University of Calgary. She has represented clients at all levels of Court in Alberta. Sarah is working on her master’s degree of law at the University of Calgary.

Sarah is a violinist with the Calgary Civic Symphony, and shares her professional skills as a board member. She is enthusiastic about the Civic’s mission to share the joy of music in an accessible, affordable way.

Manon Mitchell

Past President

Manon is a retired IT professional whose passion for music has led her to be an active supporter of the Civic - both as musician, board member and behind-the-scenes planner. Her IT career was mainly in the Oil and Gas industry and now that she is retired, she spends most of her time as a Rotarian volunteering in Calgary, as well as overseeing global projects in Cambodia and the Dominican Republic.

Today, Manon performs in the Civic violin section but is also an entertainer in Palladio Music, a violin duet cover band.

Graham Drake

Director

Graham is a recently-retired executive who now finds himself with more time to support the community organizations with which he shares a passion. For a lifelong music lover for whom piano-playing is a daily source of stress relief, the Civic Symphony is a perfect fit.

Graham brings a wealth of community service and governance knowledge to the board and is excited to use his business acumen to help the Civic Symphony achieve its goals.

He thoroughly enjoyed playing with The Civic for five years, including the 40th anniversary season, before commitments at work prevented regular attendance at rehearsal.

Martin is keen to use his management experience to support The Civic as a Director and looks forward to eventually rejoining the violin section of the orchestra.

She has played the bass violin with more than 15 community orchestras across Canada and the U.S. and has previously served on the Board of Directors with the Parkdale Orchestra in Ottawa and Classics On Stage Yellowknife.

Deanna can also frequently be found in the pit for Front Row Centre Players given her particular love for Broadway musicals.

Dr. Kim McBride

Director

Kim has a passion for helping those with rare disorders and their families live better lives. Many have undertaken an odyssey to learn the cause of their problems, and unfortunately few have specific treatments. His work helps diagnosis them or discover new diseases, develop novel therapies, including gene therapy, and bring these to clinical trials. He has held leadership positions locally, including the role as Department Head of Medical Genetics at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine, and nationally and internationally in professional genetic and family support organizations.

His aim is to bring his previous experience and leadership to help plan for the future and strengthen this amazing organization providing a superb musical program for the people of Calgary.
